Two different systems under the hood
SMS is the original text messaging standard, carried over the cellular network itself and supported by every phone regardless of brand. Business SMS at scale typically runs through short codes, toll-free numbers, or ten-digit long codes registered with carriers for bulk sending, a process built primarily for marketing blasts and appointment reminders sent to large lists.
iMessage is Apple's messaging protocol, delivered over data rather than the cellular SMS network, and it only works between Apple devices. When both people in a conversation are on iPhones, the system automatically uses iMessage instead of SMS, which is why the bubble color changes depending on who you are texting.
The bubble color is a trust signal, not just a color
On an iPhone, a green bubble means the message came in over SMS. iPhone users have learned, mostly without thinking about it, to associate green bubbles with marketing texts, two-factor codes, and messages from people who are not on iPhones. A blue bubble means iMessage, the same color used for texting friends, family, and coworkers.
That association did not appear out of nowhere. Years of spam texts, robocalls disguised as texts, and bulk SMS marketing have trained people to treat unfamiliar green-bubble messages with more suspicion than blue-bubble ones. A business reaching out for the first time inherits whichever level of trust its channel already carries, before the lead has even read a word.
Deliverability and filtering work differently too
Bulk SMS sent from short codes and toll-free numbers goes through carrier filtering designed to catch spam, and legitimate business messages sometimes get caught in that filtering by mistake, especially from numbers with low sending history or content that trips automated spam detection. iMessage does not route through the same carrier SMS filtering pipeline, which removes one layer of risk that a message never arrives or lands filtered.
This does not make iMessage inherently spam-proof. It simply operates on different infrastructure with different failure modes, and for a business sending a small number of highly relevant, individually written messages rather than a mass blast, that infrastructure tends to behave more predictably.
Where SMS still makes sense
None of this makes SMS obsolete. Android users cannot receive iMessage at all, so any channel strategy needs an SMS fallback to reach non-Apple phones. High-volume, low-personalization use cases, like appointment reminders sent to thousands of contacts, are also often better suited to SMS infrastructure built for that kind of scale.

What this means for lead follow-up specifically

A first message that looks like a normal text from a real business tends to get read and answered at a higher rate than one that looks like the same kind of message a lead has learned to ignore.
The compliance layer looks similar either way
Whichever protocol a message travels over, the underlying obligation to the recipient does not change. Consent to be contacted and a working, immediately honored opt-out mechanism matter the same amount whether a message is arriving as a blue bubble or a green one. Choosing iMessage for its trust advantage is not a substitute for handling consent correctly, it is a separate decision that sits alongside it.
A mixed-channel approach is usually the realistic answer
Because iMessage only reaches Apple devices, any business texting a broad lead base needs an SMS fallback for Android recipients regardless of how much they prefer iMessage's presentation for iPhone users. The practical setup most businesses land on detects which protocol is available for a given contact and uses iMessage when possible, falling back to SMS automatically rather than forcing a single channel across every lead regardless of what device they carry.
This distinction is worth understanding even for businesses that never touch the underlying infrastructure directly, because it explains why the same follow-up message can look and perform differently depending on which phone the lead happens to be using.
Group and read-receipt behavior differs too
iMessage supports features SMS does not handle the same way: reliable read receipts, typing indicators, and richer group messaging behavior. For a one-on-one lead conversation, the read receipt in particular matters more than it might seem, since it gives both sides a small, honest signal about whether a message has actually been seen, something SMS threads on many phones do not surface as clearly.
Neither channel is inherently more or less legitimate
None of this should be read as SMS being a lesser or untrustworthy channel in absolute terms. Plenty of legitimate, well-run businesses text exclusively over SMS and do it well, particularly for reminders and confirmations where the content is short and expected. The difference described here is specifically about first-touch lead follow-up, where the goal is starting a real conversation, and where the accumulated cultural weight behind blue versus green bubbles happens to matter more than it does for other kinds of messages.
